TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Arnold alum Alex Steen’s legal battle continues as he looks try to get one more year of college eligibility based on the new 5 in 5 rules passed by the NCAA in June.
Steen played four years total so far, three seasons at Florida Southern and last season with FSU. He asked a Leon County Circuit Court for a preliminary injunction to allow him to get one last year of college ball, as many others in his 2022 high school class have won.
That judge however denied the motion. That does not end the legal battle but it’s a setback for now as the 26-27 season approaches.
FSU would be the likely landing spot for Alex should he win in court down the road, though he has other options. On Monday, coach Loucks talked about his desire to get Steen for one more season.
“You know, I’m not the smartest guy in the world, so maybe a bit of confusion on this whole situation that’s going on around the country. To answer your first question, yes, we have a roster spot for him,” said FSU basketball head coach Luke Loucks. “We’ve always had a roster spot for him. He’s not displacing anyone. He’s worked out with our team the entire summer. Before all this kind of came about with the 5-for-5 rule, he was planning on going to play professionally in Europe. But he’s still in classes, and he’s currently in classes at Florida State. He’s worked out with our guys the entire summer. And I like to always keep one roster spot open.”
Alex averaged 6.8 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds in 32 games for the Seminoles last season. Here’s hoping the next court case goes his way.
