WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Brightline is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the near future, according to reports.

As soon as this week, Brightline could file for bankruptcy in hopes of restructuring $1.1 billion of its $5.5 billion debt, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The doubt regarding the future of Florida’s popular train service has been mounting since earlier this year, when the first rumblings about the company’s debt began to mount.

The company — which began in 2018 — has been growing in revenue, generating $214 million in 2025 after making $188 million in 2024, according to Bloomberg. Despite the growth, it hasn’t been fast enough to repay its ever-so-mounting debt.

Brightline’s operating railroad isn’t expected to be part of the filing, according to the reports. This is thanks to U.S. law providing special bankruptcy protections for railroads.
