“Two children should still be alive today,” Padrick said during a news conference.

According to police, the shooting stemmed from an altercation that began while the boys were playing a backyard football game days earlier.

The mother of the two boys told WPBF 25 News that the suspect and a few others showed up to their apartment Sunday and began trying to fight the boys before shots were fired.

Two women were also shot in the incident. Police said both survived and received treatment for their injuries. Family members said one of the women underwent surgery on Thursday.

“No family should have to endure the senseless loss of children,” DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said.

As the investigation continues in Georgia, the boys’ family and members of the Fort Pierce community are focused on bringing them home to be laid to rest.

“No mother or father should have to bury their children. It truly goes against the laws of nature and expectation in our society,” Cochran-Johnson said.
