FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WKRC) – A teenager was shot by an Airbnb renter after he allegedly tried breaking into the property.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on Sept. 24 in Fort Lauderdale, according to WPLG. Police received reports of an attempted robbery. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man shot in the upper torso.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department said two armed men broke into the Airbnb and got into an “altercation” with the renter, who then shot 18-year-old Dareon Pubien in the chest.

“I just heard the shots, maybe at least 10, and then everybody went running,” said area resident Arthur Butler Junior, according to WSVN.

After being shot, Pubien fled the scene on foot. He was later found bleeding near the home by police. Emergency crews moved him to a nearby hospital, where he is said to be in critical but stable condition.

Pubien now faces charges of attempted murder and home invasion with a firearm. A second man arrested in connection to the robbery was identified as 25-year-old Sean Thompson. He faces the same charges at Pubien.

Thompson appeared in court on Sept. 25. He was ordered to be held in jail without a bond, according to CBS News.

Now, the shooting will be investigated as a self-defense case, with the renter who engaged the suspect not being publicly identified.

According to WSVN, Police are working to determine whether this incident was random or targeted.
