There are backyard visitors you expect in Florida. Lizards? Absolutely. A snake slithering through the grass? Scary, but still believable. A crab apparently clutching part of a pocketknife while your dog investigates? That’s when you start believing that Florida is not a real place.

Yet, that’s the bizarre situation a dog named Summer found herself in during a recent encounter in Palmetto Bay, Fla., captured in footage shared by NBC News. Summer approaches the crab cautiously as the crustacean raises its claws, one of which appears to grip a small blade. It’s such an absurd visual that the comments quickly turned the crab into a tiny Florida outlaw. But beneath the jokes is a pretty sensible response from Summer. Instead of charging straight in, she hangs back and assesses a strange animal that clearly isn’t interested in becoming her newest backyard friend.

Summer the Dog Wasn’t Taking Any Chances With This Florida Crab

Summer’s hesitation is part of what makes the encounter so funny. The crab looks ready for battle while the much larger dog seems to be reconsidering every decision that brought her to this particular patch of grass.

Viewers had plenty of fun filling in the rest of the story. “That crab be from the bad side of the beach,” joked one commenter. Another simply declared the scene “Peak Florida.” Several viewers also questioned whether the knife had been placed there for the video. The footage itself doesn’t establish how the crab ended up holding it, so there’s no reason to turn the most entertaining possibility into a factual claim.

The strange encounter also fits into a delightful category of dogs discovering that other animals don’t always follow the rules they expect. We’ve seen a corgi and Great Pyrenees turn fishing into an unexpectedly competitive sport, though Summer probably would have preferred her aquatic encounter to involve fewer sharp objects.

What to Do When Your Dog Encounters Wildlife

Knife or no knife, Summer’s decision to keep some distance was the useful part of this otherwise ridiculous encounter.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends preventing dogs from chasing or trying to “play” with wildlife because an animal’s behavior can change quickly during an encounter. The agency also recommends keeping dogs on non-retractable leashes of six feet or less while walking, particularly around areas where wildlife may be difficult to spot.

Florida is also home to blue land crabs, which occur naturally in southern Florida. According to the University of Florida, these crabs are naturally shy and generally aren’t considered a threat to people unless they’re caught or handled. Get too close, however, and they can deliver what researchers describe as a serious pinch.

Giving wildlife space also protects your dog. That’s especially worth remembering because unexpected emergencies don’t always come with a warning, as the recent story of Phoenix firefighters reviving two dogs after a house fire made painfully clear.

Summer, thankfully, didn’t need to learn that lesson the hard way. Sometimes the smartest response to finding an armed crab in your backyard is also the funniest: keep your distance and let someone else figure out what is going on.
