Hialeah residents will elect a new council member on Tuesday, Nov. 3. We asked the two candidates where they stood on key issues facing the city. Here is how they responded:

HIALEAH COUNCIL GROUP 2 Mariana V. Chavez Mariana V. Chavez Courtesy of the candidate Why are you running for office?

Mariana V. Chavez: I don’t seek public office for the sake of a title but wanting to bring transparency to City Hall. My mission and purpose as your future councilwoman would be not only to bring openness to the residents of Hialeah but focus on initiatives that truly help our residents.

What makes you the best candidate for the position you are seeking?

Mariana V. Chavez: I work in the well-known grassroots nonprofit organization Turning Point USA as a field representative in South Florida. Being a part of growing the Pro-America movement has shown me that Gen Z is interested in what’s going in their community; it’s about time they have a voice in local government.

What is the most pressing issue facing the community you wish to represent?

Mariana V. Chavez: As your next city councilwoman, I don’t plan on being a “sellout” to the people of Hialeah. I’m here to work with the mayor, not for the mayor. My job here is to serve you. Whether it’s the rising cost of water, broken infrastructure and property taxes — I promise to tackle these problems with full honesty for our residents.
