A man has been arrested for driving under the influence following a crash in Hialeah that left a motorcyclist hospitalized with multiple fractures, police said.

Juan Carlos Rodriguez-Barrera, 61, was arrested on charges of DUI and DUI with damage to property or person, an arrest report said.

According to the report, the crash happened just after 3:20 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of East 4th Avenue and East 39th Street when Rodriguez-Barrera, who was driving a Toyota Highlander, collided with a Harley Davidson.

The driver of the Harley was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with multiple rib fractures, multiple pelvic fractures and lacerations to the face.

When Hialeah Police responded an officer smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Rodriguez-Barrera’s breath and noticed he had bloodshot, red eyes, the report said.

Rodriguez-Barrera also had an “erratic and argumentative behavior” and refused to perform field sobriety exercises, the report said.

He was taken to a local hospital where a blood sample was taken, but while there he started yelling at nursing staff and requesting to leave, and spontaneously said he “drank a little bit of alcohol” in Spanish, the report said.

Rodriguez-Barrera was arrested and booked into jail. On Monday, he appeared before a judge, who set his bond at $10,000.
