Millions of Americans turn retirement age every year, and those hoping to relocate to the perfect destination full of sun and ample amenities should look no further than the Cape Coral and Fort Myers area of Florida.

The destination, located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, was named the best metro area in the United States for quality of life after retiring by Storage Cafe, an online marketplace for storage units. Known as a “Waterfront Wonderland,” as its residents call it, Cape Coral is built around 400 miles of canals and boasts more than 1,500 acres of parks, according to Visit Florida.

The city offers a combination of year-round great weather with an average daily temperature of 73.8 degrees Fahrenheit, a high life expectancy of 80.6 years, and a high average retirement income of $42,000 per year, per Storage Cafe’s report. In addition, nearly 30 percent of Cape Coral’s residents are aged 65 or older, which means “seniors here enjoy a community built around their needs.”

That translates to an abundance of outdoor recreational facilities, including boat ramps, tennis courts, golf courses, and proximity to beaches. In the colder months, the city’s population swells with “snowbirds,” or someone who moves from a cold-weather destination to a warm one for winter, and was recently named the best warm-weather winter destination for retirees.

Overall, Florida dominated the list with four metro areas appearing in the top 10. The Naples–Immokalee–Marco Island region took the No. 3 spot in the country with retirees there enjoying the longest life expectancy at 84 years. The area also boasted the highest retirement income in the U.S. at $59,000.

“Known for its sandy shores, palm-lined avenues, and abundance of golf courses, Naples offers the kind of serenity and sophistication that make retirement feel like a reward,” the company wrote.

Beyond Florida, the area of New York and Newark, New Jersey, came in second on the list of the best metro area in the U.S. for retirement quality of life. Retirees there have access to nearly 6,000 healthcare providers for every 10,000 residents, compared to the national average of 4,400. And three of the country’s top 20 hospitals are located in New York City.

“There’s simply more of everything—from world-class entertainment and dining to world-leading healthcare,” Storage Cafe wrote.

For those drawn out West, only one community west of the Mississippi River ranked in the top 10: Boise, Idaho. The city was named the “safest in the nation based on crime rates, giving seniors a strong sense of security,” but had a lower life expectancy of 78.8 with only 14.6 percent of residents over 65 years old.
