Standing along a wooden boardwalk in an open bog landscape under bright daylight, frontman J Mascis stands prominently in the foreground profile facing right, wearing a bright pink mesh-backed baseball cap, glasses, a blue and black tie-dye jacket over a dark grey t-shirt, and a necklace. Behind him, bassist Lou Barlow stands facing forward wearing a dark beanie, glasses, and a neon lime-green quilted puffer jacket over a black shirt. In the background peeking behind Mascis, drummer Murph stands looking forward with long dark curly hair under a clear blue sky.(Front-back) J. By now, the neighbors around Jannus Live know there’s always going to be a loud show happening nearby. Dinosaur Jr. might push the limit.

The ear-splitting rock trio has a new album, There Near, to share. It’s unclear if the album is Dinosaur Jr.’s ninth or 13th outing, but those details won’t matter to devotees of frontman J. Mascis, a reluctant, Jazzmaster-wielding American guitar god who has turned a lifetime of navel-gazing into one of the loudest catalogs in punk-rock.

Flanked by founding members, drummer Emmett Patrick Murphy (“Murph”), and bassist Lou Barlow, Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. will surely dip into the new LP (one of its most joyous, ironically), and a catalog that goes all the way back to 1985 when the band was just called “Dinosaur” (“Jr.” was added to avoid a lawsuit).

Los Angeles rock quartet Starcrawler opens.

Tickets to see Dinosaur Jr. play Jannus Live in St. Petersburg on Saturday, Feb. 20 are still available and start at $52.89.
