TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WWSB) – Florida residents renewing a driver license or identification card will soon receive a new design.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will begin issuing redesigned driver licenses and ID cards at service centers statewide Sept. 30. The new cards are expected to be available for online renewal through MyDMV Portal by the end of November.
The updated cards feature images tied to Florida history and culture.
Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine appears on the front. The design also includes an orange in the word “Florida,” a manatee in the lower-left corner and an alligator inside the REAL ID star.

The back of the card features Space Shuttle Discovery and the phrase “Let Us Alone,” which FLHSMV says appeared on Florida’s first unofficial flag.
FLHSMV said the redesign includes additional security features intended to help prevent fraud. Those features include ultraviolet ink, raised elements and details that change in appearance when viewed from different angles.
Residents do not need to replace a current license or ID card solely because of the new design. Existing credentials will remain valid until they expire or until a required change, such as a new name or address, is needed.
FLHSMV also said licenses held by people younger than 21 will include a red box showing the date when the cardholder turns 21.
