Hunger Action Day: How to help with Second Harvest Food Bank
ORLANDO, Fla. —
It’s currently Hunger Action Month and Tuesday, Sept. 29, is Hunger Action Day!
Hunger Action Month is a national campaign — launched by the Feeding America network of food banks and held every September — to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America, and right now, more than 649,000 people in our community are facing hunger.
Greg Higgerson, chief development officer at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, joined WESH 2 News for a live interview with anchor Michelle Imperato to share steps you can take right now to help.
“One in seven of our neighbors finds it necessary to seek assistance with food at some point during the year. That’s the overall population, but the really heartbreaking part of that is that one in five kids under eighteen needs that kind of help,” Higgerson said. “We have that perception of who it might be out there that needs help, but the truth is, we pass those people every day. Think about one in seven, it’s the people that are working in many cases. Our emergency food pantry partners tell us that the people who are coming to them are usually- they’re between two jobs.”
