PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WINK) — Frustration filled the Punta Gorda Charlotte Library as taxpayers questioned county leaders during a presentation that left some concerns unanswered.

County administrators discussed Amendment Three first, showing how each dollar collected through property taxes is allocated. County leaders anticipate the amendment would cut revenue by more than $50 million in the first year and nearly $94 million in year two when property taxes are reduced a second time.

The second presentation focused on the county’s 1% sales tax that is added to the state’s current 6% sales tax. County leaders say this funding helps complete additional capital projects while passing off some of the cost to visitors who spend their money in Charlotte County.

The difference voters will see this year is the sales tax would be for a 20-year period, as opposed to the shorter five to six-year terms taxpayers have seen in the past. Some of the main concerns homeowners voiced were how the county is currently spending money and overall confusion about how Amendment Three would be implemented.

The meeting highlighted growing questions from residents about the county’s financial planning and tax structure.
