One of Broadway’s most celebrated recent musicals is headed to South Florida this fall as Slow Burn Theatre Company opens its 2026–27 season with “Come From Away,” the Tony Award–winning production inspired by the true events that unfolded after Sept. 11, 2001.
The musical will run Oct. 10 through Oct. 25 in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. Based on the experiences of nearly 7,000 airline passengers and crew aboard 38 planes diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, after U.S. airspace closed following the attacks, the show chronicles how residents of the small Canadian town welcomed the stranded travelers over five days of uncertainty and upheaval.
Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Tony and Grammy Award nominees Irene Sankoff and David Hein, “Come From Away” premiered on Broadway in 2017. The Broadway production earned seven Tony Award nominations, winning Best Direction of a Musical and received three Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical.
Slow Burn co-founder Patrick Fitzwater will direct the South Florida production.
“‘Come From Away’ reminds us that even in the most difficult and uncertain moments, there is an extraordinary capacity for people to come together,” Fitzwatersaid in a release. “This is a story about strangers becoming neighbors, fear giving way to trust and the profound impact of simply choosing to help someone in need.”
“Come From Away” is the first production in Slow Burn’s five-show season, which also includes “Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in December, “Mean Girls” in February, “Dear Evan Hansen” in April and “Rent” in June.
