Northside Kiwanis Club gives away baking and cooking donations to encourage bonding

  • September 30, 2026

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A group called Grandparents as Parents (GAP) held its monthly meeting Wednesday morning at the Leroy Collins Main Library, where special guests offered members free resources.

Starting at 7 a.m., the Kwanis Club began preparing 70 baking-supply kits to help grandparents bond with their grandchildren while making brownies or muffins.

Northside Tallahassee Program Chairman Paul Williamson said the event is one way to help these families.

“There’s a lot of people here that need a lot of help and any way that we can help, or that any of the other clubs can help. Prevent child abuse and prevent other things from happening as the children grow up from younger to teenager,” Williamson said.

This grant-funded project allows the Kwanis Club to partner with Prevent Child Abuse Florida. Organizers said baking is a way for grandchildren to experience something new with their grandparent.

Victoria Burke, a GAP member for 11 years, said she recognizes the importance of trying new things.

“It’s so nice of them to bring this in, to be able to allow the kids to do this. And I am a grandparent, a dedicated grandparent,” Burke said.

Representatives from the American Red Cross, Supervisor of Elections and the New World’s Reading also attended the meeting.

GAP member Martha Beverly was excited to grab some books for her granddaughter.

“I’m gonna make sure we read these books together, make sure of that. And the ones she gets in the mail, every month when they start. We go have us a good time together,” Beverly said.

Other grandparents say they cherish this time with their grandchildren and are grateful for a community that supports them.
