NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A heavy law enforcement presence at a North Fort Myers gas station has nearby neighbors on edge.

Lee County Sheriff’s deputies were seen surrounding the Gulf Gas Station at Business Route 41 and River Road earlier. Multiple deputy vehicles circled the area as deputies completed their investigation.

That investigation seemed to be centered around the storefront, which was the only portion of the property taped off.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is in its early stages and will share more information when possible.

Despite the heavy law enforcement presence, business did not stall. WINK News saw multiple people still pulling in to get gas while deputies worked the scene.

Larry Gonhue has lived across the street in Twin Pines Village, a mobile home community, for the last five years. He says the station’s location could make it easy for people to get away quickly.

“It seems like a nice place. It was clean. They just did a whole bunch of work to it, put a new canopy over it and everything but it’s close to the bridge, so they could do whatever they want and be you know downtown Fort Myers before they know it,” Gonhue said.

Gonhue says he had security cameras installed after items were stolen from his property a few years ago, and this situation has put him back on high alert.

“When I first came here, I used to lock my car every night. Then I was like, ‘well it’s gotten a little better,’ but now I think I’ll start locking the car every night now,” Gonhue said.

The store clerk said he was not able to speak with the media. WINK News also reached out to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for more details and will share updates as they become available.
