A Jacksonville High School student arrived at school with a firearm inside a backpack Thursday morning, according to a message the school sent to parents.

The student was stopped at the school’s security checkpoint and “did not proceed beyond the entrance screening area,” the message stated.

“During the daily security screening, the scholar walked through the school’s body scanner, which alerted staff to the item,” the message read. “School security immediately stopped the scholar, secured the backpack, and discovered the weapon.”

School staff contacted Jacksonville police, who took the student into custody, according to the message.
