A candidate for Davie’s Town Council was arrested early Friday morning on DUI-related charges, according to court records.
Jordan Nelson, 36, of Davie, faces one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs first offense, one count of DUI with a blood-alcohol content over .15 and one count of DUI with property damage, all misdemeanor charges. He pleaded not guilty to the charges, court records show.
Shortly before 4 a.m. Friday, a Davie Police officer arrived at the scene of a single-car crash near the 11000 block of Southwest 45th Street, in the area of Hiatus Road and Orange Drive, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The officer found Nelson in the driver’s seat of a blue Ford F-150 that had crashed into a guardrail and knocked over a utility pole, the affidavit said. Nelson allegedly smelled of alcohol, and his speech was slurred while the officer spoke with him.
Nelson agreed to perform voluntary field sobriety tests and failed them, according to the affidavit. He agreed to take a breath test, which showed a blood-alcohol content of 0.173% in one reading and 0.163% in a second test. The legal limit is .08%.
The damage to the guardrail and utility pole was estimated to be more than $20,000, the affidavit said.
“Jordan is humbled by this experience and takes the matter very seriously. He has taken appropriate steps to address it through the proper legal process,” his attorney A. Randall Haas said in an emailed statement to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “We remain optimistic about the resolution of the case, and Jordan remains focused on the issues and the message he has been conveying to his supporters throughout his campaign.”
Nelson is one of four candidates for the council’s District 3 seat in the election Nov. 3. The district includes areas south of Interstate 595 between South Pine Island Road and South Hiatus Road.
Nelson’s campaign platform includes operating a transparent local government, improving the town’s infrastructure and balancing growth and development responsibly, according to his campaign website.
