The city of Stuart issued a boil-water warning in the vicinity of East Ocean Boulevard and Southeast Monterey Road on Oct. 1.
Disease-causing organisms — including viruses, parasites and bacteria — could be present in the water and may cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea and associated headaches, officials said. Tests will be conducted to determine when tap water will be safe to drink again, which typically takes at least 48-72 hours to conduct, in accordance with public-safety protocols, Guertin said.
People should use only boiled tap water or bottle water for drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice and when making food until further notice. The notice also applies to pets and domestic animals.
Boil water advisory tips
If bottled water is not available, boil your tap water. To kill the germs, bring the water to a full rolling boil for one minute. To avoid burns, allow boiled water to cool before using.
Drinking and cooking: Use bottled or boiled water for drinking and to prepare and cook food.
Brushing teeth: Use bottled or boiled water. Do not use tap water that has not been boiled first.
Washing dishes: Dishwashers are generally safe to use if they have a sanitizing cycle or reach a final rinse temperature of at least 150 degrees. If possible, use disposable plates, cups and utensils during a boil-water advisory.
Laundry: It is safe to wash clothes as usual.
