A Legacy of Hospitality, Community, and Connection in Jacksonville
Jacksonville lost more than a premier restaurateur with the passing of Karin Tucker; the city lost a foundational figure whose vibrant personality was naturally suited to bringing people together. She was a smiling face, a tireless leader, and a generous presence who deeply understood that true hospitality is always as much about the people as it was about the food.
Karin, who passed away on Sept. 4 at the age of 74, helped shape Jacksonville’s independent restaurant culture for more than three decades. Alongside her longtime business partner and close friend, Barbara Bredehoeft, she opened Biscottis in Avondale in 1993. What began as a modest coffeehouse quickly blossomed into one of the neighborhood’s most recognizable and beloved gathering places. In 2000, the pair expanded their culinary footprint by opening BB’s Restaurant and Bar in San Marco, extending a signature dining style that was creative, approachable and distinctly their own.

Their unique synergy and forward-thinking vision were forged through shared inspiration and cross-country adventures. In the early days, the duo took research trips to California to immerse themselves in the West Coast’s emerging coffee and food scenes, hunting for concepts they could bring home to Jacksonville. These scouting trips were full of life and spontaneous transformation: Barbara famously left Florida for one trip dressed conservatively in a pair of corduroy shorts and knee socks, only to return home completely reimagined, sporting a pair of Doc Martens and black spandex. It was exactly that kind of bold, eclectic and unapologetic energy that they breathed into their business ventures.
Biscottis, in particular, captured the essence of Karin’s personality. The space was hip without trying too hard, eclectic without losing its warmth, and permanently filled with local art, memorable dishes and an atmosphere that encouraged guests to linger. While Karin possessed an exceptional instinct for flavors, spices, presentation and detail, her true gift was knowing how those elements worked in tandem to make every guest feel uniquely welcome.

Barbara remembers a woman who could connect effortlessly with just about anyone. Karin spoke four languages, enjoyed people from every walk of life and possessed a charismatic personality that could fill any room. Yet, behind the bright smile and the lively gatherings was a serious, dedicated professional. She intimately understood the long hours, constant attention and profound personal commitment required to build lasting, successful institutions.
Karin’s energy extended far beyond the dining room walls. In Avondale, she dedicated her time and leadership to the Avondale Merchants Association, driving fundraising efforts, planning special events and actively supporting the neighborhood that had so warmly embraced Biscottis. She contributed not only her ideas and effort, but often the very things she knew best –food, drink, hospitality and an innate ability to make any occasion feel special.

For those who knew her, Karin leaves behind a legacy as a trailblazing pioneer of Jacksonville hospitality, remembered not just for the landmark institutions she built, but for the warmth, laughter and genuine connection she gifted to her community.
To honor her memory and the profound impact she made on our community, a celebration of life will be held on what would have been her 75th birthday, Monday, Oct. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Biscottis. Friends, family, and patrons are welcome to gather, share memories and raise a glass to a life beautifully lived.
