A couple is speaking out about a frightening encounter near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when they said someone wearing a mask approached them with an axe.
Jason Morgan said the Friday morning encounter was like something out of a horror movie.
“He approached me and raised the axe and said, ‘Are you ready?’ And I said, ‘What is this?’ And he kind of smiled, raise it again and say, ‘You ready?'” Morgan said.
Morgan said he managed to take the axe away, while his girlfriend called 911 and the person fled on foot.
“He running like he’s in a movie, like a Freddy Krueger kind of person, just running off like slow motion. It was crazy,” girlfriend Lilieth Crawford said.
Crawford said the man was wearing a ski mask and camouflage.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area along Southwest 34th Street just outside the perimeter of the airport around 3:20 a.m.
Officials described the weapon as a hatchet.
Deputies canvassed the area but weren’t able to find the person, officials said.
People who work nearby said they’re concerned, especially after hearing about a similar incident just a few weeks ago. They think it may be the same person.
“It’s scary. I mean, we come out at night and there’s not many lights,” worker Svetla Koleva said.
BSO is asking anyone with information to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
