TREASURE COAST — A surprise delivery is giving Indiantown High School’s Electrathon team a boost as students work to complete their second electric go-kart.

Florida Power & Light Co. provided the team with additional tools and resources for the project, continuing its support of a program that gives students hands-on experience with science, technology, engineering and math.

“To have that support, it helps us grow and expand and reach more students and that is really what is important,” said Michael Cunningham, the tech coordinator and Electrathon instructor at Indiantown High School.

Indiantown High School has participated in the Electrathon program since the 2023-24 school year, when FPL donated the school’s first build kit. Since then, students have continued developing STEM skills through hands-on competition.

Through Electrathon, students design and build custom electric go-karts using STEM principles learned in the classroom. The projects also give students experience with teamwork, critical thinking and real-world problem-solving.

“The skills students develop through Electrathon help prepare them for success in higher education and future careers,” said Isabella Burckhardt, community relations specialist at FPL. “We’re proud to continue investing in Indiantown High School and its talented students because we know they’re the innovators, problem-solvers and community leaders of tomorrow.”

For junior Luka Rosario, part of the appeal is getting to take the project from the workshop to the track.

“I like how hands-on it is,” Rosario said. “I like how we all get to build and have a part in this project. In the end, it pays off because we all get to race it and have fun with it. That’s not something a lot of people get to do.”
