TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Heavy smoke poured from a two-story home on Teal Lane early Friday as Tallahassee firefighters responded to a residential structure fire.
The Tallahassee Fire Department was dispatched at about 1:22 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home and made entry, finding heavy smoke and fire on the first floor.
Firefighters began extinguishing the fire while searching the structure for possible occupants. No people were inside the home at the time of the fire, but crews rescued one cat during the search. Two cats were found dead.
The fire was quickly brought under control. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
The Tallahassee Fire Department reminded residents that working smoke alarms are among the most important tools for protecting families from a home fire, providing early warning and valuable time to escape. The department said residents should have smoke alarms on every level of their home and near all sleeping areas, and test them regularly to make sure they are working properly.
