A man being held in a county jail died Saturday after deputies found him unresponsive, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies found Carlos Dwayne Howard, 57, unresponsive in his cell at the Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa shortly after 4 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Deputies began livesaving measures until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:33 a.m.

The county medical examiner was working to determine Howard’s cause of death.

No other information has been released.

Records show Howard, of Tampa, was booked into jail on Aug. 17 on drug sales and possession charges. At the time of that arrest, Howard was out on bond on similar charges from 2024, so he was being held without bond. Both cases were pending at the time of Howard’s death, and he had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
