CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Retail theft takes more than a quick response to stop, and Cape Coral police say their partnerships with local businesses are making a real difference.
The Cape Coral Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit recently held its quarterly Retail Partnership Meeting, bringing together law enforcement agencies from across Southwest Florida and retail partners to share intelligence and strengthen collaboration. Property Crimes Unit Sgt. Niland led the meeting.
Two recent arrests show exactly why that teamwork matters.
On Oct. 3, Yohanka Lopez Borrego was arrested for theft after Walmart Asset Prevention stopped her as she tried to leave the store without paying for merchandise that included a bicycle, clothing, accessories, health and fitness products and craft items totaling $779.88.
When officers asked about the bicycle, Lopez Borrego said she planned to take it for a “test ride” around the parking lot before paying for it.
The following day, on Oct. 4, Aaron Wilmore was arrested for theft and fraud after Walmart Asset Prevention caught him picking up discarded receipts in the parking lot and using them to fraudulently return merchandise for cash.
Wilmore had already collected $80.02 through the fraudulent returns and also concealed men’s jewelry, Liquid I.V. and food worth $150.21 before leaving the store without paying.
Police say these cases highlight how sharing information between law enforcement and retail partners helps them identify trends and build stronger investigations.
