The Tallahassee Police Department has launched a homicide investigation after a man was shot and killed in west Tallahassee on Monday night.

A TPD Watch Commander confirmed to the Tallahassee Democrat that the man was shot at The Capitol apartment complex at the 300 block of Dixie Drive off West Tennessee Street.

Police were called to the apartments that are marketed to college students at 9:42 p.m.

“When officers arrived on scene they located one adult male suffering from a gunshot wound,” the agency wrote in an incident alert posted to Facebook. “Life-saving measures were attempted, but sadly, the victim died on scene.”

The case remains open and active.

No other details were available, including the circumstances of the shooting. Neighbors told a photographer at the scene that a person was taken away by an ambulance with its sirens off.

The shooting marks at least the 46th serious shooting in the capital city and county this year. So far in 2026, 13 people have died and at least 31 people have been injured, according to a Tallahassee Democrat analysis of gun violence that tracks incidents involving injury, death or a clear risk of serious harm.

The shooting is the second fatal shooting in less than a week. A man was shot and killed on Sept. 30 in the Frenchtown neigborhood.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident but did not speak with officers on scene to contact TPD at 850-891-4200. Individuals may also remain anonymous by contacting Crime Solvers at 850-574-8477.
