Big City Tavern — Fort Lauderdale

Big City Tavern closed September 30 after a quarter-century at 609 E. Las Olas Blvd. The American restaurant and bar served a menu broad enough to cover a meatloaf sandwich at lunch, rigatoni Bolognese at dinner, and weekend brunch. It also played a part in Louie Bossi’s career before he had restaurants bearing his name, with the chef working his way from line cook to executive chef. The restaurant did not give a reason for closing in its farewell announcement.

Foxy Brown — Fort Lauderdale

Foxy Brown served its final tables on May 10, following Mother’s Day service, after 15 years in Fort Lauderdale. The Victoria Park restaurant drew crowds for comfort food like banana bread, grilled cheese, and patty melts, with brunch among its biggest draws. Owner Elliot Wolf cited rising lease and insurance costs and described the closing as a break, not a permanent departure.

Howl at the Moon — Fort Lauderdale

Howl at the Moon closed February 28 after roughly 14 months on Las Olas Boulevard. The national piano-bar chain’s return brought live music, cocktails, and sing-alongs to a 5,000-square-foot space, but lasted far less time than its previous decade-long run at Beach Place, which ended in 2009. The closing came with little warning, with the bar still promoting a St. Patrick’s Day celebration just weeks earlier.

Darden had announced plans to eliminate the Caribbean-themed brand, closing half its remaining restaurants and converting the others. According to Pembroke Pines News, the Pines restaurant closed early because the company had placed most employees in other roles and could no longer staff it. Customers expecting time for one last visit missed their chance.
