If Miami had a theme song for each month of the year, October’s would be this: Wake Up Everybody.

Wake up, everybody; no more sleepin’ in bed.

As our mischievous Latin brother El Niño has thoughtfully spared Miami the wrath of its madness (up to now) – like polar bears in the northwest, it is our turn to wake up. A city that spends August and September half‑asleep in refrigerated caves finally steps outside, wipes off the sweat, and remembers who we are. Let’s get this party started. Bienvenido a Miami.

Buena Vista Social Club struck the first chord, waking our musical DNA. The Moss Center’s Motown Madness kept the alarm ringing, a heartbeat echoing across Cutler Bay. Insomniac’s Factory Town takeovers — especially Turnstile’s white‑hot killer eruption in Hialeah — felt like the city’s youth shaking the last drops of summer out of bed. Across the Atlantic, French youth riot over the conditions shaping their futures. Here at home, Americans — squeezed by affordability, gas prices, food prices, and endless wars — jump up and down at Turnstile shows, shaking loose whatever rage they can. Turnstile, born in blue‑collar Baltimore, has been carrying that pulse since 2010. And long before that, Santigold warned us with “disparate youth,” an anthem for a world tilting off its axis. With the shadow of Miami hovering over Venezuela and Cuba, we feel the heat in our own way — different pressures, same unrest.

The zeitgeist is humming everywhere; Miami just dances to its own frequency. III Points, now up all night on the Carnegie Mellon campus in TAFKAW (The Area Formerly Known As Wynwood), continues to reinvent the night, thrilling every real Miami insomniac. Even the VIP Chef Showdown at the South Beach Seafood Festival feels like an awakening ritual — a gathering of fire, knives, shrimp, grits, and saltwater air. And soon, November will bring Miami Film Festival’s GEMS, once again dropping days of cinematic — I repeat — gems upon us.

Of course, Miami’s LOVE/HATE dynamic is never tranquilo. Outsiders insist we’re weird — and they’re right. Locals flee, priced out or exhausted by Cuban GenX Spanglish, contributing to our reputation for comfort in chaos. Yet so many of us LOVE LOVE LOVE it here, and definitely aren’t going anywhere. We’ll wade through King Tide, endure corruption that would twist other cities, and still defend Miami with a “dale!”

The contradictions are the point. It’s the people who we love that make us adore Miami, and it’s the people who drive us crazy who drive us crazy in Miami. That’s it. Indisputable though, is the arts scene — massive, unruly, unstoppable — that keeps the city’s heart beating. Despite the K‑shaped economy, despite the nouveau riche, the super rich, the billionaire rich, despite the unaffordability in every ordinary neighborhood where real working people live, life goes on. Art goes on. Miami goes on.

So if you want a true picture of Miami as October slides into November, get out and do something. Wake up, everybody. And if you’re stuck at home and need a jolt, watch Turnstile’s recent Factory Town videos from Hialeah — Miami’s youth letting it all hang out. If that doesn’t inspire you, it might be time to move.
