CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Fort Myers man is behind bars after allegedly trying to break into an occupied home in the early morning hours.
Around 2:08 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, Cape Coral Police officers responded to the 2400 block of SW 39th St. after reports of a break-in in progress.
When officers arrived, they found Alex Dones, 18, standing on the front lawn and yelling aggressively.
According to police, Dones allegedly smashed the glass panel next to the front door and pushed his arm and upper body through the opening to try to get inside.
He only stopped after the homeowner, who had armed himself to protect his family, warned that he would shoot.
Dones then allegedly ran along the side of the house, hit the garage door, entered the enclosed rear patio and pounded on the sliding glass doors leading into the living room.
Officers found broken glass throughout the entryway and blood on both the front door frame and the rear sliding doors, according to police.
Damage to the home is estimated at around $5,000.
When officers tried to put Dones into a patrol vehicle, he resisted by tensing his body and refusing to put his legs inside, though police say he was safely secured.
Dones was taken to the Lee County Jail, where he faces charges for breaking into an occupied home, property damage and resisting an officer.
