VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Two dogs without food or water and eight cats living in a room with an ammonia odor so strong it caused authorities to cough and gag were removed from a Florida home Monday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Volusia County sheriff’s deputies said they assisted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in arresting 34-year-old Samantha Ashby of Osteen on 10 animal cruelty charges.
Deputies responded to a home at 481 Buckshot Ave. at about 11:16 a.m. to assist FWC with a search warrant.
Inside the home, deputies said they found two dogs in crates, including one crate containing an excessive amount of feces. Neither dog had food or water, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities also found eight cats inside a room where deputies said the smell of ammonia was so strong that responding personnel began coughing and gagging.

Authorities did not provide additional information about the animals’ conditions after they were removed or details about what led to the search warrant.
