TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – With under four weeks to go until the midterm election, Leon County voting machines were put to the test to make sure they’re in good working order before Nov. 3.
The Leon County Supervisor of Elections office held a public logic and accuracy test Wednesday afternoon, an hours-long process that uses test ballots to make sure every machine used in the vote-counting process is working properly.
The process began after the public watching along picked a number of random precincts. Staff then pulled out the corresponding voting machines to test.
The test ballots include a variety of scenarios, from blank ballots to ballots with every oval filled in. Staff then see if the machines can correctly identify the corresponding error – all with the public watching on.

Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley said the test is a critical tool in making sure the public knows they can count on their vote being counted.
“We want to be transparent. We want people to know what we do, because we know that that helps breed trust or generate trust or rebuild the trust, because it’s been undermined a lot in the last several years,” he told WCTV.
After the test, the canvassing board was set to meet to approve the results.
The test comes with key dates looming ahead of election day.
Leon County begins early voting Oct. 12, with the last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot on Oct. 22.
