A new era has arrived at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

Workers on Wednesday began replacing the longtime Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare signage at the hospital’s Miccosukee Road campus with the FSU Health brand, marking the most visible sign yet of the hospital’s transformation into the clinical anchor of Florida State University’s new academic health system.

The change comes nearly six months after a divided Tallahassee City Commission voted 3-2 to approve the transfer of city-owned hospital assets to FSU, a historic deal supporters said would elevate health care, research and medical education in North Florida.

The rebranding has been anticipated since city leaders approved the sale in March.

Photos taken Wednesday showed crews replacing the Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare sign near the corner of Miccosukee and Magnolia drives. The familiar blue-and-white TMH branding is being replaced with signage reflecting the FSU Health identity more prominently but maintaining the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital branding below it. The hospital’s website also now has co-branding across the top of the site.

The changes follow a major milestone announced Sept. 30, when FSU and TMH finalized a series of agreements establishing the framework for the expanded FSU Health network. Under those agreements, TMH continues to manage day-to-day hospital operations while transitioning under the FSU Health brand over a 10-year period.

Hospital and university leaders have repeatedly emphasized that patients should not expect disruptions in their care and that existing physicians, nurses and care teams will remain in place. The partnership is intended to expand access to specialized medicine, medical research and clinical trials while strengthening physician recruitment and training opportunities in the region.

The hospital sale capped more than a year of public debate over the future of the city’s largest health care institution.

The controversy began in spring 2025 when the city revealed it was exploring the possibility of selling TMH after discussions over governance changes and the hospital’s regional expansion plans. FSU quickly expressed interest in acquiring the hospital as part of its long-standing effort to build a full academic medical center similar to those operated by major research universities around the country.

Hospital leaders and others quickly blasted the move as a “hostile takeover” of the community hospital.

Supporters argued the move would bring new investment and help position Tallahassee as a hub for advanced medicine and research. Opponents, including some community members and elected officials, raised concerns about governance, local control and the financial terms of the deal.

Ultimately, the city approved the transfer in March 2026, with FSU agreeing to pay the city $109 million over 30 years and invest hundreds of millions of dollars into the future FSU Health network. The agreement calls for the TMH brand to gradually transition to FSU Health over 10 years.

Tallahassee Memorial’s roots trace back nearly eight decades. Founded in 1948 as a city-run hospital, TMH evolved into an independent, nonprofit health system in 1979, operating under a long-term lease agreement with the City of Tallahassee while serving as the region’s primary hospital.

Over the years, it grew into the largest health care provider in North Florida and South Georgia, serving a 21-county region and expanding well beyond its original Tallahassee campus.

A hospital spokesperson said the sign is a “visible milestone” of the future of the partnership with FSU.

“The Tallahassee Memorial Hospital name remains, carrying forward a legacy of compassionate care that generations of families have trusted,” he wrote “Behind this new sign are the dedicated people who care for our community every day. Together, we’re building on that foundation to shape the future of healthcare for North Florida.”
