Hagerty’s Johnathan Madruga continued his stellar bowling season with the ultimate individual achievement.
The junior bowled a perfect 300 game last week in a victory that upped the Huskies record to 12-1.
It’s his sixth career perfect game with the other five coming in practice or junior leagues.
Third-year Huskies’ coach Brittany Ziobro, whose athletic and coaching background is in lacrosse, hadn’t witnessed a 300 in person and was hoping for a little more pomp and circumstance.
“It was cool with bowlers from other teams like Oviedo and Winter Springs giving him high fives, but I wanted the lights to go off and on and some celebration music to play,” she said. “He’s one of the most consistent bowlers I’ve seen in three years.”
It wasn’t always like that for Madruga.
In his freshman season for Hagerty, he averaged between 170 and 180 as a fairly new participant in the sport. To improve, he decided to not play on the high school team as a sophomore.
“I spent a lot of time in the bowling center practicing spares and making sure I had them down,” he said. “I had some coaching during my off year, and that also helped me improve.”
Through 24 games in Seminole Athletic Conference play, Madruga was averaging 244 — by far the best in the county.
His huge jump in average and consistency has helped the Huskies in their quest to improve on last year’s 15th-place finish at the state tournament. Hagerty leads the SAC standings.
Sophomore Kaleb Jimenez, who placed eighth in the state individually last season, has improved his average to 208 this season.
The Huskies as a team are averaging an even 200 in Baker games — almost 20 pins higher than the next best in the SAC. That illustrates their teamwork, since all five bowlers roll two frames each and need to feed off each other.
“I played lacrosse in college, but I understand coaching and talent, and we are blessed with some talented bowlers,” Ziobro said.
