A homeless man was viciously beaten downtown in three separate attacks the same night and even left there untreated by rescue personnel the second time and died four days later, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

It happened over a span of about an hour at 110 N. Hogan St. on Oct. 19. Roger Laurence Borkum, 64, died on Oct. 23, according to the Sheriff’s Office, who listed the case as a murder on its website on Nov. 3.

Marcavion Juh’Maine Lacey, 19, was initially charged on Oct. 20 with aggravated battery and then second-degree murder on Oct. 31, jail records show.

A couple days before the assault, Borkum was charged with sleeping/lodging in prohibited places on Oct. 17 but was released the same day when it was dropped.

Then two days later an officer was flagged down at Hogan and Forsyth streets by a man who said he saw three young males kicking and stomping a homeless man on the sidewalk, according to the arrest report. After their descriptions were released, another officer located the possible suspects at Madison and Adams streets. The suspects were identified but only Lacey’s name wasn’t redacted.

The report states all three were charged with aggravated battery and a robbery at 827 Forsyth St. a few minutes after the battery. However, only Lacey’s name shows up in court records with Borkum’s case number. That could mean the others were juveniles. In the arrest report for the second robbery, a 53-year-old homeless man also was beaten and kicked.

Borkum was found on the ground outside a building suffering from injuries to his head. Lacey told investigators there was “a white dude” lying there, so one of them questioned him before he was battered. He said they weren’t trying to kill him, but the officer who wrote the report noted that detectives never stated the victim was dead.

One of the other suspects advised he didn’t know the victim, but he “dissed” his “dead homies.”

What does video show?

Investigators reviewed video from two buildings and watched the same three individuals batter the victim three separate times at the same location that night, according to the arrest report. At about 9:40 p.m. the victim is seen walking south in the 100 block of North Hogan Street. The suspects are walking toward him. Upon seeing him, one conceals himself behind an electrical box on the sidewalk and he and the others appear to surveil the victim.

The victim continues walking, then turns into a small recessed area of the building at 110 N. Hogan out of the camera’s view. All three suspects can be seen entering the same area and then Lacey comes out with the victim’s backpack. Lacey and one of the others appear to rummage through the backpack before throwing it onto the ground. A short time later, all three are seen making kicking motions toward the victim before leaving.

Then at about 10 p.m., they are seen returning and battering the victim again. After they’re gone, someone sees the victim on the ground and calls the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department. After briefly speaking with the victim, rescue personnel determined he did not need medical treatment at that time and left, according to the Sheriff’s Office report. The victim remained on the ground at the same location.

At about 10:45 p.m., the trio is seen returning and battering the victim yet again.

Lacey remains in jail without bail and is being represented by the Public Defender’s Office, which has a policy not to comment on pending cases.

(This story has been updated with new details that the other victim also was homeless.)
