MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — Deputies in Martin County recovered $17,000 after a victim, fooled by a fake Chase Bank call, handed the cash to an Uber driver.
According to deputies with the (MCSO), a suspect called a victim using a fake phone number and pretending to be a representative from Chase Bank, even using a spoof Chase Bank phone number.
After multiple calls, deputies say the victim was told to withdraw $17,000 so the FBI could “secure” the funds and transfer them into a “new account.”

The victim, believing the scammer to be a real representative from Chase Bank, put the cash in a car arranged by the scammer, which left Martin County heading south.
Working with West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office’s (PBSO) South Florida Criminal Apprehension Team, the agencies intercepted the car and recovered all of the victims’ money.
“It is rare that law enforcement is able to recover stolen cash in these types of scams, which is why it is so important for potential victims to recognize the warning signs and never follow such instructions,” said MCSO in a post to Facebook. “In this case, no arrests were made, but the victory comes from the fact that the victim did not lose the money.”
In this case, deputies say the scammer used an innocent Uber driver to collect and transport the funds.
Deputies remind the public that no agency or bank will ever ask that you withdraw or hand over money to “secure it.”
