JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Residents along Ken Knight Drive are watching the Ribault River as another round of rain threatens a neighborhood with a history of flooding.
The river rose earlier in the day, reaching the level of homes behind it and creeping toward the boat ramp at Charles Reese Park. Floodwater also seeped into yards and driveways along the street before pulling back.
Forecasters expect conditions to deteriorate again, raising concerns that flooding could worsen.
Ken Knight Drive has flooded during storms including Irma, Nicole and Debby. After past flooding, the city proposed a buyback program for homes along the river that are prone to flooding.
For resident Latasha Howard, the rain also brings worries about her home’s roof. Howard said a tarp was installed, but persistent rain has led to leaks.
“Since the rain has been constantly, constantly coming down, I have seen leakage,” Howard said.
She said she worries cracks could let water into the house. “I’ve been very nervous,” she said.
Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman, who represents the area, acknowledged the neighborhood’s struggles and urged residents to follow emergency management advisories, protect important documents and prepare to relocate temporarily if an evacuation becomes necessary.
