TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray News) – A Florida woman is facing several charges after officers say they found a half-dozen children unsupervised and living in deplorable conditions.
Jamie Jakes, 30, was arrested by the Tallahassee Police Department over the weekend on six counts of child neglect.
Authorities said the situation started when patrolling officers noticed a vehicle turn and swerve onto the curve early Sunday morning to barely avoid hitting a child.
Officers said they made contact with the child and took them home. But that’s when they found children who appeared to be unsupervised at the residence, with one wearing only pants and others wearing soiled diapers.
Tallahassee police said they tried to locate clothes, but only found shoes and parts of clothing because the rest were wet and smelled of mildew.
The responding officers reported finding the home to be “unlivable,” with feces, urine and spoiled food, without having anything edible in the refrigerator.
Jakes was said to have left the home a few hours before officers arrived. Police said they came into contact with her when she returned to the house at about 6 a.m.
Jakes told officers she paid someone $150 a week to watch the children, but that person told officers that this was not true, police said.
Court documents stated that Jakes also claimed that the house was clean the day prior, but officers said the feces and urine on the floor did not match that timing.
Jakes was taken into custody and booked into jail by Tallahassee police.
