PORT ST. LUCIE — For Wings to Fly Dance Company, dancing is not about having perfect technique or years of experience. It’s about having the desire to move, express yourself and, as the company’s name suggests, spread your wings.
Founded by Tena Patterson and her daughters, Tasha Patterson Shirley and Tara Patterson, Wings to Fly grew from a desire to create meaningful dance opportunities for people of all abilities.
The company has deep roots in Martin County and has worked with community organizations, including The Arc, to bring dancers with and without disabilities together on stage.
At 81, Tena Patterson is still dancing and working alongside her daughters, who co-direct the dance company, allowing everyone to spread their wings in their own beautifully unique way.
Based in Port St. Lucie, Wings to Fly describes its work as integrated dance — an approach in which dancers of different abilities train, create and perform together.
The emphasis is not simply on adapting dance for people with disabilities, but on creating an environment where every dancer can contribute to the artistic experience.
The company offers dance training, performances, workshops and movement-based wellness programs.
Its activities encourage self-expression, confidence, creativity and physical well-being.
Participants do not need previous dance experience, making the program accessible to people who may not otherwise see themselves as dancers.
Artistic Director Tasha Patterson brings a background in dance and movement, while the organization’s leadership also incorporates experience in physical therapy, bodywork and wellness. That combination gives Wings to Fly an approach that considers both the artistic and personal benefits of movement.
Over the years, the company has become part of the Treasure Coast’s arts and disability communities, presenting performances and participating in collaborative programs. Its work has also received recognition from the local arts community.
Today, Wings to Fly continues its mission from its studio in Port St. Lucie, offering a place where dance is defined only by desire, and not by physical ability or previous experience.
For the company, the goal is simple but powerful: Give everyone the opportunity to move, create and find their wings.
