Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Agent Kevin Morris died in a head-on collision while responding to an officer-involved shooting in Mims, Florida.

Sheriff Ivey said Morris was in the process of responding to an officer-involved shooting that had taken place earlier the night of Oct. 10 in Mims.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, a Nissan Sentra was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95, south of State Road 46.

A witness said the Nissan, operated by a woman, made a U-turn on the interstate and began traveling the wrong direction.

Morris, who was driving a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Sport Utility Vehicle, was traveling northbound on I-95. At some point, the Nissan entered the direct path of Morris’ SUV, which led to a head-on collision.

Both vehicles were engulfed in flames.

Morris and the woman were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. FHP is investigating the crash.

Morris was responding to an incident where a man who was in the process of being evaluated under the Baker Act pulled out a gun and pointed it at two Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies during a well-being check request made by the son of a 79-year-old man who was suicidal.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said the deputies involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave, which is common procedure in deputy-involved shootings.

The incident will be investigated by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and will be submitted to the 18th Judicial Circuit, which encompasses Brevard and Seminole counties, for review.
