TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State is searching for answers after a 44-20 loss at Louisville, and the urgency is only growing with a rivalry matchup against unbeaten Miami next.

The Seminoles are 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. They led Louisville 14-0 in the first quarter, but the Cardinals adjusted and outscored Florida State 38-6 the rest of the way.

Coach Mike Norvell said the team has to play a complete game to get the results it wants, including sharper defensive play.

“We want to be a defense that sets the edge. We want to be a defense that has an edge to our defense, and we are not doing that good enough,” Norvell said.

Norvell also pointed to the need for improvement across the board.

“There’s some things scheme related need to be better and that has been challenged. I will say that it’s a talent to coaches, it’s a challenge to players, you have roles and responsibilities, do your job,” he said.

As Florida State prepares to face the Hurricanes in Miami Gardens during the school’s “Rivalry Week,” the challenge is steep. Miami enters the game undefeated at 5-0.

Norvell described Miami’s offense as difficult to defend, highlighting the quarterback’s ability and the balance of the attack.

“A very talented quarterback, but he’s able to make things happen as well with his movement. But just his timing and I guess his precision of what he’s able to do in the passing game. Throwing to really good people as well and having a well-balanced attack with what they do in the run game so it’s a challenging offense to defend,” Norvell said.

Jonathan Holston, the head football coach at Amos P. Godby High School and a former Louisville defensive lineman, said Florida State will need to execute regardless of how the matchup looks on paper.

“It’s a paper match up before they play. So it’s a lot of teams that’s the best team on paper that end up losing. Florida State, they just got to go out there and play ball,” Holston said.

Florida State has six games remaining this season, with three at home and three on the road. The Seminoles trail Miami 37-33 in the all-time series dating back to 1951.

Florida State and Miami are set to kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.
