PORT ST. LUCIE – A long-awaited Costco store came one step closer to reality Oct. 12, although it’s still unclear how close it really is.

The City Council approved the major site plan for the 163,000-square-foot Costco Wholesale store in the city’s Southern Grove district, just west of Interstate 95 and just east of Village Parkway at the intersection of Marshall Parkway.

That keeps the approval process moving through city bureaucracy, but it’s an open question as to when that approval could come, when construction could begin and when doors to the Treasure Coast’s second Costco store could open.

The major site plan for the 23-acre site passed the council unanimously and without comment.

Costco officials could not be reached for comment following the council’s action Oct. 12.

However, Brad Wester, a planner representing Costco, told the City Council July 13 that land clearing and work on the actual store could take 10-12 months to complete.

Things are “progressing along,” city spokesperson Scott Samples said in an email. Next steps are are city review and approval of construction plans, followed by preconstruction meetings and permitting.

Costco retail store, distribution depot both in PSL

Costco’s retail store would be across Anthony F. Sansone Sr. Boulevard from Costco’s new 1.8-million-square-foot distribution depot.

Costco has yet to close on the 23-acre purchase, Samples said. Port St. Lucie agreed in March to sell Costco the property for $6 million.

That deal came seven years after Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec – in the wake of both residents clamoring for a Costco store and Costco abandoning its first effort to build in Martin County – offered to give Costco land in Southern Grove for free.

Costco ultimately identified a second site in Stuart, where it finally opened a store in April 2025.
