Port St. Lucie, FL/CBS12 News — Port St. Lucie officials may soon install cameras at several intersections to catch red light runners.
The City Council voted Monday to approve the plan.
City Council members will need to vote on the plan a second time before it would take effect.
The Port St. Lucie Police Chief says police are seeing an uptick in traffic fatalities.
He says so far this year in 2025, Port St. Lucie has had 12 fatal traffic crashes, which he says is one of the worst years on record for the city.
Police have identified 10 intersections in Port St. Lucie where they feel red light cameras would beneficial to stop drivers from running red lights.

“At the PD, we are committed to leveraging technology wherever possible in order to multiply our force. Running a red light is a selfish act. It endangers the lives of other people,” said Port St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Niemczyk.
The Police Chief did not say during Monday’s City Council meeting how much the fine would be for those who are caught on camera running a red light.
