FORT PIERCE, Fla. (CBS12) — A man in his 30s was found dead in a lake at Lincoln Park in Fort Pierce Wednesday morning, and police are investigating how he ended up in the water.

An officer was flagged down by a citizen just after 9 a.m. who reported seeing a body floating in the lake near the 400 block of North 13th Street, Fort Pierce Police Major Michael Santiago said.

Officers say they arrived and found a man face down in the water. Rescue crews pulled him out, but he was pronounced dead.

Police identified the man but are waiting to notify his next of kin. Santiago described him as a Black man believed to be between 30 and 32 years old.

Investigators are working to determine how the man entered the water and what he was doing before his death.

There were no apparent signs of trauma to the man’s body, Santiago said, but he noted the body appeared to have been in the water for some time.

Police are canvassing the area, speaking with potential witnesses and looking for surveillance footage that could help investigators determine how the man ended up in the lake, per FPPD.

Santiago said investigators are also looking into whether currents in the waterway could have played a role in where the body was found.

It is too early to determine whether foul play or drugs were involved. Investigators are waiting for the medical examiner’s findings, including autopsy and toxicology results, to help determine the cause of death.
