PUNTA GORDA — A car chase of more than 30 miles started in Sarasota County and ended in Charlotte County wound up with an arrest, according to court records released Wednesday.

The chase happened Monday.

Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies became involved when the vehicle, a silver Toyota, was driven into Charlotte County on Interstate 75, reports show.

Marco Portillo, 30, of Cape Coral, “was actively fleeing” from the Venice Police Department and Sarasota County Sheriffs Office, the report states.

A Sarasota County Sheriff’s helicopter followed the car.

The helicopter pilot notified CCSO deputies that officers had probable cause to stop Portillo for fleeing officers, the report states.

CCSO Deputy Zachary Storie was on patrol in Punta Gorda at about 5 p.m. Monday when he spotted Portillo in the Toyota.

Storie executed a “felony traffic stop,” pulling the car over near Taylor Road and Education Avenue.

He charged Portillo with driving with a suspended license and booked him into the Charlotte County Jail, reports show.

Deputies later charged Portillo with a warrant from Sarasota County for violation of probation. Portillo remained in the jail Wednesday without bond.

Portillo has been arrested before, facing charges in Charlotte County earlier this year for driving with a suspended license.

In Sarasota County, he was charged with and found guilty of DUI following an arrest in June, court records show.

Sarasota County officials had no information Wednesday about how the chase began.
