Art Basel Miami Beach

In case you were wondering, Miami Beach’s popular annual art fair isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The Miami Beach City Commission approved a new agreement to keep Art Basel at the Miami Beach Convention Center through 2031, with an option to extend through 2033.

“Miami Beach and Art Basel have grown up together, sharing an inseparable legacy in contemporary art,” said Mayor Steven Meiner in a statement. “For more than two decades, Art Basel has shaped our cultural identity and economy, bringing extraordinary artistry and creative vision to our shores.”

Since its 2002 debut, Art Basel Miami Beach became an immediate sensation, featuring galleries exhibiting emerging artists through shipping containers on the sand. Its initial success triggered a ripple effect across the city, with satellite fairs springing up alongside the main fair to form what we know today as Miami Art Week.

Last year’s edition drew approximately 80,000 visitors and generated an estimated $570 million in economic impact across Miami‑Dade County. During Art Week, hotels fill up, restaurants are booked solid and local businesses alongside transportation see an increase.

Looking ahead

The recent approval includes a Letter of Understanding that establishes a designated “Art Basel Zone” and expands longstanding public benefits for Miami Beach residents, students and cultural partners. It also paves the way for continued collaboration as the Convention Center District evolves with the addition of a new Convention Center Hotel.

Art Basel returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Drive) from December 4 to 6. VIP preview days (by invitation) run from December 2 to 3. You can learn more on their website.
