Instead of waiting for someone to find him, one missing German Shepherd went straight towards a helping hand, and the video is absolutely adorable. Instead of roaming the streets lost, he trotted straight up to the front doors of the Tampa Police Department and let himself be the one to ask for backup.

On September 30, the German Shepherd was captured by security cameras walking right up to the door of the police department. When an officer opened the door, the dog didn’t hesitate. He walked right in, like he’d been expecting the invitation all along. The department later shared the moment online, joking that an “unexpected K-9 applicant” had shown up for duty.

Officers Turn Detective to Track Down His Family

Of course, a stray dog wandering into a police station isn’t actually applying for a job. Officers quickly shifted from amused to helpful, taking the dog to a veterinarian to be checked out and, more importantly, scanned for a microchip. That tiny chip turned out to be the key to the entire story. It gave officers a way to track down the dog’s family, something that wouldn’t have been possible without it.

The Tampa Police Department used the moment to remind pet parents just how valuable microchipping really is. A collar can fall off, and a tag can go missing, but a microchip stays put. For dog and cat parents who aren’t sure whether their pet is registered or if their information is current, checking with a veterinarian or the chip’s registry is a simple way to make sure a lost pet can always find its way back.

The most touching part of the story came next, and it was all captured on an officer’s bodycam. When the officer arrived at the dog’s home, he found a woman who had no idea her dog had already been found. She was clearly having a rough day.

“I’m not so good, I lost my dog,” she told him.

“I have him,” the officer replied.

He went on to explain exactly what happened: “Yeah, just wanted to make sure because he ran up to the police department, so I had him in the car.”

The woman broke down in tears of relief, hugging her dog tightly. “Thank you, thank you,” she said, over and over, clearly overwhelmed with gratitude.

Before releasing the dog right back to his parent, the police officer made sure to give him a final goodbye hug and pets.

It’s the kind of ending every lost pet story hopes for, and it’s one that almost certainly wouldn’t have gone so smoothly without a microchip doing the hard work behind the scenes.
