Opera Orlando has a new performance sailing onto the stage this coming January.

Tickets are now available for “Flying Dutchman” by Richard Wagner. The tale of a cursed captain will be Opera Orlando’s first Wagner production, onstage Jan. 22–24, 2027.

“This is the opera where Wagner truly became Wagner,” said Opera Orlando’s artistic director, Grant Preisser, in a press release. “He wrote it after a storm-wrecked crossing of the North Sea, and you can hear it. The score doesn’t describe the ocean. It is the ocean.”

“Flying Dutchman,” written in 1843, is “a ghost story, a love story, and a force of nature all at once,” according to the press release.

Baritone Darren Drone will return to Orlando as the lead with German soprano Johanna Will as Senta. “Flying Dutchman” will also feature bass Nathan Stark as Daland, tenor Brendan J. Boyle as Erik, mezzo-soprano Lauran Zahn as Mary and tenor Benjamin Ruiz as Steersman, with Geoffrey Loff conducting the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra.

“When we started this company, Wagner was an aspiration,” Preisser said in the release. “In just ten years, that aspiration is becoming a reality.”
