GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. — A 19-year-old University of West Florida softball player died in a crash this past weekend in Gadsden County.

UWF posted this message Tuesday afternoon in remembrance of Cloey Criggall:

We are deeply saddened to share that we have lost a fellow Argonaut, Cloey Criggall, this past weekend. Cloey joined our softball program this fall and was a beloved teammate who will be greatly missed. We send our thoughts and prayers to her family, friends, teammates and all who knew her.

The crash happened on Sunday around 4 p.m. on I-10 in Gadsden County, which is near Tallahassee.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Criggall was driving a sedan when she veered off the road and hit a tree. Heavy rain and wet road conditions were present.

She was pronounced dead on scene. No one else was injured.

Criggall is a native of Suwannee County who graduated this past spring from Branford High School, where she starred for the softball team before joining UWF.

“I’m so proud of her, of who she became but,” Branford HS softball coach Oscar Saavedra told ABC affiliate WCJB. “What hurts the most is that she worked so hard. She told me all of her dreams, all of her goals — and she reached them. She got where she wanted to be and unfortunately, she couldn’t live her dream.”
