CORAL SPRINGS, FL — The founder of an evangelical Christian ministry and his daughter died in a fiery small plane crash on Monday morning in south Florida, according to multiple reports.

Alexander Wurm, 53, who founded the ministry Ignite the Fire and his daughter, Serena, 22, were traveling to deliver supplies to those recovering from Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica when their plane went down in a residential area in Coral Springs, NBC News reported.

Coral Springs police and the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department responded to the crash site at 5000 Northwest 57th Way in the Windsor Bay neighborhood around 10:20 a.m., the city of Coral Springs said in a news release.

While the city didn’t name the victims, it confirmed that two people were killed in the crash.

Police are working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Broward Sheriff’s Office to investigate the crash.

Wurm was piloting the 1976 Beechcraft King Air plane that took off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and was headed for Jamaica when it crashed into a lake behind a Coral Springs Home, the Cayman Compass reported. The plane was scheduled to land at Montego Bay International Airport and had already made several trips bringing supplies to the island.

“It sounded to me like two race cars, then ‘boom,’ like a quick hit or explosion,” area resident Dawn Marrill told WSVN. “I looked up, and I saw, like, all this debris in the air. Like, it looked like somebody blew up a building, and it was just everywhere.”

Robert Swinger-Vargas told the news outlet that he was in his car when he saw the plane go down and called 911.

“Next thing we know, it just took a dive, and it went straight to the ground,” he said.

Ignite the Fire Ministry confirmed the deaths of the father and daughter, releasing a statement on Monday night, saying Alexander Wurm was known for his “warmth and unwavering kindness” and that he “devoted his life to serving others,” ABC News reported.

“Throughout his life, Alex travelled extensively, reaching various countries and continents, where he tirelessly worked to bring faith, compassion, and support to those in need. His legacy of faith and compassion touched countless lives,” the ministry added.

The ministry also said Serena Wurm, “following in her father’s footsteps, was a beacon of empathy and hope, inspiring all with her commitment to humanitarian work.”
