MIAMI GARDENS — The Hurricanes lost standout safety Bryce Fitzgerald to an injury early in Saturday’s rivalry game vs. Florida State.

The defensive back suffered an upper body injury during the first drive of the game and was in “massive pain,” according to the ESPN broadcast.

Fitzgerald returned to the field in the second quarter.

The Hurricanes lost another safety later in the first quarter. Zechariah Poyser was called for targeting for a hit on FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels and was ejected from the game.

Fitzgerald has been a key part of Miami’s secondary since arriving at UM. He had a team-leading six interceptions last season. This year, he has primarily played cornerback due to injuries to other players in the Hurricanes’ secondary. Fitzgerald has 14 tackles and two pass breakups this season.
