ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sebastian Cruz scored a long-range strike with two minutes to go as the Tampa Bay Rowdies took a 1-0 victory against Detroit City FC at Al Lang Stadium on Saturday night to clinch the 2026 USL Championship Players’ Shield, marking the second time the club claimed the trophy in its history.

With the victory, the Rowdies moved eight points clear at the top of the overall USL Championship standings ahead of both Detroit City and El Paso Locomotive FC, sealing the club’s first silverware since it won both the Players’ Shield and the Eastern Conference title.

The campaign, which has seen the Rowdies claim a league-best 17 victories with one game remaining, saw Tampa Bay go undefeated over its first 12 games of the regular season, establishing a margin to the remainder of the league no-one was able to bridge. The Rowdies’ +24 goal differential also currently ranks first in the league, highlighting the balance the side has achieved in its first full season under Head Coach Dominic Casciato.

“Everybody loves winning,” said Casciato after the match. “Everyone’s in the game because they love winning, but to win with these players, with this staff, it’s just so special. So, I really want to cherish tonight and everything we’ve done this season and hopefully it gets left in the tank for us to keep on for [the playoffs].”

Leading an overhauled roster that now features only two players that ended the 2025 campaign with the club, Tampa Bay recorded its 15th shutout of the regular season against Le Rouge. That would have been enough to earn the silverware on its own, but with two minutes to go, Cruz delivered an exclamation point with a brilliant strike that dipped into the top-left corner of the net to send the crowd at Al Lang Stadium into celebrations.
